Winding through seas of green and islands of ancient trees…
About Longwalking.com
The inspiration for this site came from our experiences preparing and making long-distance hikes across France and Spain. We discovered a lot of information, but too much of it was hard to find, incomplete, outdated, poorly presented, inaccurate, and sometimes, plain wrong. We hope you’ll find the information here useful and stimulating – maybe even entertaining at times. Like most everything else, things keep changing, and we do our best to keep everything updated and organized. If you have any suggestions, we’d love to hear from you. So sling on your virtual backpack and wander around.
Longwalking is about the pleasures of traveling long distances on foot. (Pleasures are the things you remember after overcoming the other stuff). This website is about long-distance walking adventures, “walking holidays”, how to take the first steps, and how to experience the joys of the trail. Although our ancient human ancestors walked long distances, eventually all across the Earth, today it seems that travel by foot has become neglected, even forgotten, in a world that often rushes past the simple in pursuit of more complicated schemes of happiness.
I don’t know about you, but some days I feel like taking a good long walk. In many ways, life doesn’t get much simpler than deciding to walk from, say, here (go ahead, place your finger on a map), to, well, how about over there…
It’s a big world out there, and there’s a lot that goes into choosing a route, picking a season, assembling gear and preparing mind and body for the long road ahead. The focus here is on personal travel – carrying everything you need in a small and lightweight bundle. With planning and practice, you can travel on foot indefinitely with a total weight of less than 20 pounds on your back (and some of our minimalist friends scoff at such burdensome 2-digit numbers!)
Longwalking focuses on all aspects of the what, when, where, how, who and why of long-distance ultralight walking adventure. Join us for a stroll through France, Spain and beyond…
Thanks to all the friends who are helping out…
We hope to see you out there on the trail. Cheers!
